You only need her if you insist on following quest markers. If you're siding with the raiders, all you need to do is clear out the area and raise a flag. Nothing is stopping you from collecting the star cores and plugging them in.

I'll give it a go after work, I REALLY WANT THAT POWER ARMOR.
