Not likely, but it doesn't hurt to get it out of the way for testing. First disconnect the advance module and try for spark. Then disconnect the black/yellow trace wires that goes to each switchbox. (That's what the cdi spark coil drivers are called.) and try again.OK first put the thermostats back in. The thermostats restrict and control the amount of water around the cylinder head. If you run without thermostats the water is circulating too fast and doesn't allow the cylinder head to run at the proper temperature and doesn't allow the cooling water to take the heat from the engine. Feb 21, 2010. #10. Re: 1989 150 mecury black max XR2. My 88 XR4 is a 2.4 wid a clamshell cowl. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. XR6 came with either 4 1/4 or 4 3/4 in lower.I have a 1987 Mercury 150 XR2 Black Max and have recently started leaking oil from the power trim reservoir on the right side near top seal when trimming down only.
