The car started making the noise at about 65K miles just outside the extended warranty. I finally decided to replace the cam gear.

Mine starts like brand new now. You can buy repair contacts off of Amazon, Dorman #02349 for about $20. Not a mechanic, but I think this is most likely a defective battery. First it failed to hold a charge, now it fails to conduct a charge to the starter when you try and jump start it. When the engine is cold started, it uses different fuel injectors that are quite noisy. They tend to make fairly loud clicking noise that may be the rattle that you describe. This is normal for the injectors to be noisy. chuckles70.
